Herpes
 Herpes
is a contagious infection caused by the Herpes simplex virus. It is actually of two types - the one caused due to
herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV1) - and the sexually transmitted variant
HSV2.
The former leads to the formation of cold sores around the patient’s mouth, while the herpes caused due to HSV2s apparent symptoms include pain, tenderness, and blisters on and around the genitals.
Other symptoms of the HSV2 infection include burning sensation or pain during urination, a clear mucus-like discharge through the vagina in females and a similar discharge from the penis tip in males, and swollen glands in the groin region. The disease however is not life threatening, but it could cause a lot of discomfort for the sufferer. It is the herpes that affects the genitals that is described in this article.
The transmission of herpes simplex virus - both types - is through contact. That is, the virus could spread as a result of touch, sharing common utensil or kiss. HSV2 can also spread through urine and genital discharge, the reason why it is tagged as a
sexually transmitted disease (STD).
Here, it must be understood that symptoms may not necessarily appear even if a person is carrying the virus. It could lie dormant for years on end without causing any apparent discomforts to the carrier. As a result, there is a chance of the carriers spreading the virus unknowingly. Finally, if pregnant mothers have this disease, then it could pass on to the newborn as well, if the delivery happens to take place in the natural way, through the vagina.
As in the case of most sexually transmitted diseases (STD), the best way to prevent genital herpes is to abstain from sexual activity completely. This is more relevant in the case of sexually active teens. Even latex condoms are not that effective in preventing herpes.
In case of pregnant women, if they ever had blisters or genital sores, it must be readily conveyed to the surgeon so that he/she can affect birth through some non-vaginal means (such as a cesarean section). Avoiding direct contact with the genitals is another way to prevent herpes from spreading.
The treatment to HSV2 infection includes antiviral drugs such as acyclovir that are available both in the pill form and ointment. But, it must be realized that no medication could cure genital herpes. It only could shorten the outbreak and alleviate the discomfort to a good extend. During treatment, it is also advisable to undergo frequent warm baths, for it will help soothe the skin irritation sizably.
