Francois de la Peyronie described this condition.
The symptoms of Peyronie's disease, besides bent and painful erection, are a thick band of hard tissue that develops on one or other sides of the penis. The diameter of the penis may also get narrowed during erection. It is the scar tissue that develops on the penis that makes it bend; sometimes, hardening occurs on both sides of the penis, wherein indentation and shortening of the penis occurs.
There is no actual cause for Peyronie's disease; however some doctors believe that it could be due to an injury to the penis where tears may have occurred in the tissue, autoimmune disorder, collagen abnormality, where collagen builds and remodels itself or because of certain medications like beta blockers and drugs used for treating seizures, glaucoma, and multiple sclerosis.
