Treatments and drugs to treat Impotence
A
man suffering from impotence or erectile dysfunction is one who finds it difficult to attain and sustain an erection. There are basically many causes that bring about impotency like some nerve disorders, some diseases, some medications and some psychological factors like stress and fear of sexual failure.
When suffering from impotency, the first thing that is advised is to discontinue any medications you take that induce impotency. Sometimes, you may know, or the physician may find out, the underlying disease causing impotency in you. Its treatment will in turn treat impotence. Then there is psychotherapeutic counseling that can be turned to eliminate impotence like counseling and behavior modifications.
Sometimes the physician may also suggest vacuum devices, drugs, devices that are implanted through surgery and
drugs that get injected. Many a time, the patient’s partner is the one who can treat impotence the best with a gradual stimulation and intimacy as this tends to relieve any anxiety the patient may have with sex.
The drugs that are used to treat impotency are either taken orally, injected into the penis or by inserting it into the tip of the penis. The drug
sildenafil citrate, that is marketed as
Viagra is the best drug for the treatment of impotence. This is a chemical that relaxes the penis muscles when taken an hour before any sexual activity. This increases the blood flow to the penis by responding to sexual stimulation. However, this drug should not be used more than once in a day.
The drugs alprostadil and phentolamine are injected into the penis to widen blood vessels; this helps the man gain potency. Even the application of a muscle relaxant like nitrogycerin on the penis surface will stimulate an erection.
Then there is the procedure of inserting a pellet of alprostadil into the urethra with an applicator. This brings about an erection within ten minutes of its insertion which lasts for a maximum of an hour.
With a mechanical vacuum devices, a partial vacuum is created around the penis when placed around it. This draws blood into the penis to engorge and expand it. On attaining an erection, this device has to be removed. Sometimes a semi rigid rubber sheath is placed on the penis to attain an erection and during the process of intercourse.
Some physicians may surgically implant devices called prostheses to restore erection in a man. And there are some physicians that suggest surgery to repair blocked arteries that induce erectile dysfunction.
