Urethral Stricture
 There are some men
who suffer from urethral strictures which is a condition where there is a narrowing in a part of the urethra. With this narrowing of the urethra, the flow of urine for the male will be hampered and not be the same as always. The reason men usually suffer from this problem is because they have a longer urethra than women.
There are numerous reasons for a man to suffer from urethral strictures. It can be due to urethral infections like
gonorrhea, tumors in the urethra and because of some urethral injury, disease, surgery or
catheterization wherein the urethral tissue gets inflamed or scarred. Sometimes, the male may suffer from urethral strictures at birth. However, this is an uncommon condition.
There are several signs and conditions wherein you will be able to guess that you suffer from urethral stricture. If the flow of urine seems to have decreased or passing urine is a painful process then it is a sign of urethral stricture. The incomplete emptying of the bladder and an infection in the urinary tract or the presence of blood in the urine are all signs and symptoms of urethral strictures.
The doctor diagnoses urethral strictures through an x-ray that is taken after injecting dye into the urethra. A cystoscopy, where a narrow tube with an attached camera is inserted into the urethra, is done to confirm a urethral stricture. Once the doctor confirms a urethral stricture, he will advise treatment according to the condition of the urethral stricture.
The patient experiences temporary relief with the insertion of the suprapubic catheter into the abdomen to drain the bladder. Sometimes the doctor may consider dilating the urethral stricture with the help of a narrow instrument inserted into the bladder. In other cases, the stricture is incised internally using the help of a cystoscope or endoscope.
Some types of urethral stricture require placing a permanent catheter via the urethra so that the bladder can be drained. Then there are cases of urethral strictures where the doctor conducts a surgery to correct the condition; this procedure is called open urethroplasty.
At one time, urethral stents were used profusely to treat urethral strictures. However, since these stents produced long-term results, these stents are not used in the treatment of urethral strictures anymore. It is important to treat the urethral stricture appropriately when seeking treatment; otherwise the stricture has a tendency of recurring.
